Typically when one thinks of “made in” they assume one is talking about a company that utilizes raw materials to create a finished good. Historically, many companies have set up shop in neighborhoods to be near the raw materials in the area. They exploit these materials and many times have polluted the area. Once the raw materials have been exploited and/or the company leaves for various reasons, the people who live there are left with the waste.

In these situations, typically, communities have offered these companies various tax incentives to choose their area in hopes the companies will offer jobs to local residents. This type of short- term community/economic development strategy leaves many countries polluted with eyesores that restrain future development.

We define children as raw materials and believe that when we give them the right type of guidance, they will become healthy adults (the finished good).
Our vision is called #familyhood. #familyhood is a community development strategy that defines the schools in any community as the center for development. #Familyhood is driven by two main motto’s. 1) The Friends of School motto, which states, “every school shall have a Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.” 2) The Mo’ Better Food motto, which states, “every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.” In a nutshell, #familyhood is an inter-generational network at school sites that improves the communities food system, while increasing governance from within the community.

Sounds good! But, how does a community advance towards #Familyhood?

#1stSaturdays is the “do now” strategy to advance towards the vision of #Familyhood.
#1stSaturdays is the official monthly volunteer / recruitment day at school sites. #1stSaturdays represents the first Saturday of every month, when the schools three main school based membership organizations (SGA,PTA,ALUMNI) are collaborating in starting/planning/ managing/operating their school garden, farmers market, grocery store. #1stsaturdays is also a time for each organization to share updates, enable community partners/local businesses to share jobs, internships and other opportunities to the students, parents, etc.
